CSS Credit Officer III Credit Shared Services Credit Division Location is open to Baltimore, Washington or Rockville
 
Basic Function Underwrite/decision commercial credit requests with group credit submitted to the Credit Shared Services group. Assist with the monitoring of the performance of the existing loan portfolio within assigned regions and business lines. The incumbent will assume a leadership role relative to credit risk management. They perform a mentoring function with the relationship managers and credit analysts, to insure the requisite level of technical expertise. Incumbents are responsible for the credit quality of the portfolio of loans approved under their respective authority and handle the more complex and higher risk loans.   Essential Position Responsibilities Adjudicate and assist with the structure of the largest/most complex applications for credit submitted by relationship managers in their assigned regions. Act as a secondary signing authority for less-experienced underwriters and credit officers within the CSS group. Insure that established turn-time standards are met. Process requests through the credit analyst group for completion of the analysis document. Additionally, will be responsible for the accuracy and completeness of the final analysis document. Assist the Commercial SCO’s with the monitoring of the overall credit quality of the loan portfolio in their assigned geography. This includes monitoring delinquency, catalog loans, non-performing loans, charge-offs and recoveries in the portfolio. Insure relationships in the portfolio have the appropriate risk ratings. Attend quarterly catalog meetings. Insure that collateral exceptions and policy violations are minimized and that lines and loans are renewed and reviewed in a timely manner in compliance with the Bank’s credit policies. Visit assigned regions quarterly to meet with relationship managers, management and customers. Act as a team lead to more junior staff , providing mentoring and training to improve the credit skills of the relationship managers in their assigned markets. Monitor field approvals/overrides in their assigned regions and provide feedback to Senior Management as appropriate. Participate in various department initiative projects as needed.   Nature and Scope The individual in this position will have a significant impact on the profitability of the regions and business lines they support and will impact overall Bank profitability as well. Effective underwriting and portfolio management skills are essential for the Regions to meet their profitability and loan growth objectives.  The individual in this position must insure that loan applications are decisioned timely and in a manner consistent with the Bank’s credit philosophy. Loans must be structured to meet risk criteria while supporting the sales force in their objective of growing the loan portfolio. The effective monitoring of the loan portfolio will ensure that credit losses are minimized. Individuals in this position will generally be members of the Bank’s Managers Loan Committee. The individual within this position assumes a leadership role in the group. They are expected to be experts in the area of commercial lending and are widely depended on for their expertise. They are charged with insuring that the relationship managers in their markets maintain the credit skills necessary for their position. Through their coaching and mentoring they can improve the effectiveness of the sales force and the profitability of the Bank. The incumbent regularly interacts with Credit Administration, Collateral and Documentation and Counsel’s Office on issues relating to commercial lending and credit policy.   Supervisory Responsibilities The incumbent may also be responsible for managing a team of credit officers/underwriters and for providing oversight of the flow of credit requests for multiple regions or business lines.   Basic Qualifications Requires a Bachelor’s degree in Business with formal credit training. An MBA is desired with concentrations in finance or accounting. Fifteen years of experience in relevant financial industry (banking, commercial, insurance, leasing) with seven years extensive credit/underwriting experience.   Technical Skills Strong computer skills are required, e.g. Microsoft Word and Excel.   Other Job Information Strong leadership and mentoring skills are essential along with the ability to develop rapport and work well with relationship managers and their management team. Requires being a team player with a dedication to customer service and a strong sense of urgency. The incumbent must possess excellent communication skills and have the ability to interact effectively with Senior Management. Advanced knowledge of accounting and financial analysis is required. Formal credit training and thorough understanding of business and personal tax returns required. The incumbent must have sound knowledge of legal statutes that pertain to commercial lending including contract and UCC law, collections, compliance, etc. Expertise in SBA and various government/municipal guaranteed and participation loan programs is preferred.M&T Bank Corporation is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
