THE OPPORTUNITY:
Develops and implements various operational risk/compliance related initiatives within Business Banking. Oversees a risk pillar for the division (e.g. AML/BSA, operational risk, compliance). Manages the work and employee development of a team of employees responsible for risk and control functions in the business unit.
POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:
Manage strategic initiatives, influencing internal and external partners to meet Bank and divisional priorities.
Develop and implement policies and procedures for risk programs with limited guidance. Act as project leader in the execution of various complex and highly visible projects.
Lead in the assessment of potential degree of risk to which Business and Professional Banking assets (loans) and liabilities (deposits) are exposed and analyze each to determine how they can be mitigated and/or minimized.
Lead in the determination of solutions to risk-related business issues impacting the division. Proactively identify new problems, projects, or items for attention and execute solutions using a combination of unit and external resources.
Manage the day to day work and employee development of a team. Identify staffing needs for area of responsibility, conduct interviews and recommend for hire as needed. Onboard, train, and manage the performance and development of team members. Team responsibilities are likely to span different risk pillars and/or have significant variation in complexity and type of work.
Manages a team of higher-level employees or managers to ensure completion of projects and complex tasks.
Takes action to support, address, or escalate risks or opportunities unrelated to Business Banking when applicable.
Develop, implement, and maintain relevant processes and procedures that will decrease loan/line/lease delinquency and chargeoffs and provide flexibility to react to portfolio performance and market conditions.
Proactively identify risk related issues/problems impacting the business currently or emerging risks that may not yet have materialized in the business.
Investigate potential issues and opportunities sufficiently to prioritize a response or reaction.
Develop plans to explore and/or solve risk related business problems impacting the division.
Represent Business Banking in the M&T community and outside the bank.
Identify corrective action and formulates solutions that minimize the impact of identified compliance issues.
Communicate to appropriate business units and follow up to ensure corrective actions are implemented.
Provide peer leadership and mentoring to support the development and coaching of colleagues.
Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
Complete other related duties as assigned.
NATURE AND SCOPE:
The Business Banking Risk Management function includes, but is not limited to, managing the degree of risk to which Business and Professional Banking assets (loans) and liabilities (deposits) are exposed and analyze each to determine how they can be mitigated and/or minimized.
When performing the basic function of the job (identifying, assessing, addressing risk) has consideration for both the Business Banking landscape and a larger scope related to other business units or the Bank overall.
Requires the ability to develop a thorough working relationship with Senior Management; Corporate Compliance, Enterprise Wide Compliance, Enterprise Wide Risk Management, Business Banking Regional Managers and Business Bankers; Special Assets; Loan Review; Loan Controls; Business Banking Operations, Marketing and the Loan Procession Center; Retail Risk Management; Lending Services Asset Management; Branch Operations; Compensation; Human Resources; Finance; Legal and Audit.
MANAGERIAL/SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY:
Manages a function, and a team of employees.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 8 years’ relevant work experience or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 12 years higher education and/or relevant work experience.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Strong analytical ability and creative problem solving skills.
Strong data interpretation skills.
IDEAL QUALIFICATIONS PREFERRED:
Prior banking experience.
