Job Description

Basic Function

An analyst joining the Market Relations group will be part of a fast-paced team that works to attract, retain, and service capital and funding providers and influencers to enhance shareholder value. The group works to build a deep understanding of the needs of bank investors, analysts (buy and sell-side), funding sources and rating agencies across fixed income, equity and hybrid capital markets. Members of the Market Relations group interact with and support other internal personnel at the bank, including the Corporate Finance (corporate development and capital management) and FP&A Departments and the CFO. The group is also responsible for peer analytics and tracking market events, trends, and peer actions, all of which helps guide the strategy of the bank.

Essential Position Responsibilities

Execute comprehensive analysis on M&T’s financial performance relative to the bank’s stated peer group.  Contribute to assessing the competitive environment and offer benchmarking and context to M&T’s financial results

Proactively track, monitor and analyze data on peer bank performance and bank industry trends

Perform in-depth financial modeling, including computation of profitability, capital return, and asset quality metrics

Deliver periodic and ad hoc requests for competitive intelligence across the organization including credit performance analysis loan growth results, and P&L trends

Monitor and evaluate peer bank communications to the public markets

Extensive interaction with other members of Market Relations in evaluating financial results and crafting communications to the investment and analyst community

Prepare presentations for senior management, directors, and investment community


Nature and Scope

The position requires strong quantitative and analytical skills, a keen attention to detail, and the capability to coordinate multiple complex projects simultaneously, interact with business units throughout the organization, and present the results and status of various initiatives effectively to senior management.

Supervisory Responsibility


Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance

Minimum 2 years of experience in a role requiring advanced financial modeling capabilities and Microsoft Excel skills

Advanced financial modeling skills

Technical Skills

Excellent PC skills with a solid working knowledge of Excel, Powerpoint, and other department software

Other Job Information

Requires excellent, demonstrated presentation and written communication skills

Self-motivation and attention to detail is essential

Strong interpersonal skills necessary for relationships within organization and with external constituencies

Prior bank capital management, capital planning-related project management or investment banking experience would be beneficial

Working knowledge of SNL is a plus
