Senior Finance Manager- Profitability & Analytics

Buffalo, NY


This role will build out and lead a comprehensive profitability and analytics function, developing a best in class profitability framework and reporting and analytic capabilities.

Develop and communicate scalable methodology and framework to measure profitability, returns across multiple dimensions through the aggregation of customer account level data.

Provide thought leadership on profitability and return matters on existing portfolio and new business across the enterprise in a manner that drives change in behavior.

Design and lead the change in thinking and action on resource (money and capital) optimization across the enterprise.

Use knowledge of profitability, analytics, and efficiency improvements to provide input to, and advise on, the development of business strategy as required.

Create an analytics and reporting function that will drive proactive insight into the profitability and behavior businesses, customers, products; productivity and capacity analysis, and suggest actions for improvement.

Lead the creation of sustainable process and implement a technology solution to calculate and report multidimensional profitability on a monthly basis.

Work frequently with senior and executive management from business lines, service functions, and finance to communicate results of profitability analysis and partner with them to drive more informed management of their businesses, products, and customers.

Leverage organizational efforts around data and systems to build out the profitability and analytics capabilities of the organization, while maintaining legacy reporting until new capabilities are built.

Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.

Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.

Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.

Build and maintain effective internal networks across the organization, ensuring good flow of information and building the reputation of the Finance function.

The position has leadership responsibilities and direct contact with and supports internal personnel at the Senior Vice President, and Executive Vice President (C-suite), CFO levels

Direct supervision of 3 employees inclusive of analysts and managers

Bachelor’s Degree in Finance, Business or related field, or equivalent in experience

Minimum of 10 to 15 years of financial services experience at a 100B bank or other comparable financial institution

Minimum of 3 years of profitability, costing (eg Activity Based Costing), enterprise performance management

Minimum of 5 years of experience directly managing people, 5 years of experience leading a multifunctional team

Deep knowledge of profitability methodologies and calculations is required including: activity-based costing and transaction-driven cost allocations, funds transfer pricing, economic and regulatory capital allocations, productivity and capacity measurement

Broad knowledge of banking business lines, products, processes, and support functions is required

Experience leading or playing a key role in implementations of bank-wide profitability, financial, or analysis systems

Experience leading or participating in analytics functions, developing hypothesis, analyzing large amounts of data, presenting findings and suggested actions for improvement

Ability to clearly communicate and bridge gap between senior technical resources and senior business line leadership

Ability to create and present clear, concise presentations to all levels of senior management

Excellent communication skills both verbal and written

Strong project management and execution focus; extremely organized and effective at time management

Ability to prioritize critical work and manage team expectations, deal with interruptions, and meet deadlines in a fast paced and growth oriented environment.

Proven track record of successfully influencing senior and executive (C-suite) management

MBA/CFA preferred

Ideally 15-20 years of experience in profitability, analytics, or financial analysis in banking

Prior background in top 5 management consulting firm, niche profitability consulting firm, deep finance experience, financial services experience, treasury, FP&A, quantitative and analytical background,

Strong quantitative and bank analytical experience

Experience in designing, implementing performance measurement systems at financial institutions

Deep domain expertise in FTP, cost allocation methodologies, capital framework in the Financial services industry

Executive presence

Strong leadership experience in driving change and building teams from ground up

Project management training or PMP certification a plus

Process improvement experience in banking is a plus

Background in data management, ETL, coding jobs and logic

Demonstrated ability to translate financial information and concepts into simple messaging
