Basic Function

Manage a staff of Financial Analysis Managers who are responsible for supporting  the financial analysis activities of major segments of the Bank.  Provide strategic direction to segment and bank on emerging opportunities and issues as well as developing structure to resolve complex problems.  Participate in the analysis and provide guidance on investment and project decisions for the segment and the bank. 

Essential Position Responsibilities

Oversee the management of two or more Financial Analysis Managers who have management authority, generally at the assistant vice president and vice president level, and who are responsible for operations and projects relating to the bank’s financial status for major segments.

Work with other senior and executive managers to identify emerging opportunities and issues to include, but not limited to, revenue enhancement, cost control and standardization.

Contribute to building structure for resolving complex problems across the bank.

Participate in the development and implementation of Finance department goals.

Communicate with all levels of management including management group regarding fiscal policies.  Provide direction in the implementation of policies.

Organize and oversee new projects/initiatives within department or across the bank when issues or opportunities arise.  Build consensus within department and across bank for important projects and issues.

Work within the department and across the bank to identify opportunities to reduce expense and/or increase revenue.

Oversee two or more Financial Analysis Managers with emphasis on the staff development, creating a framework for success, leading by example and creating opportunities for staff.  Promote all management success factors.

Exercise managerial authority over staff with respect to hiring, termination, salary recommendations, and performance appraisals.  Provide employee development and aligning hiring of new employees with strategic direction of department.

Nature and Scope

The position’s primary responsibility is staff management, managing a minimum of two Financial Analysis Managers who are responsible for direct the day-to-day activities of a major business segment.

The position is responsible for:

  - Shaping strategy  - the capacity to guide analysis and discussion, and influence the outcome for key  decisions.

  - Leadership Versatility – ability to effectively work with all levels of employees at the bank including senior management.

  - Decisiveness – capacity to work in a fast paced environment, handle multiple projects simultaneously and manage resources appropriately.

  - Attracting, Retaining, and Developing Talent – provide feedback to direct reports and help with career development as well as having solid track record for recruiting and hiring.

  - Communication – ability to communicate important information and focus on clients’ requirements at all level of management.

The position has direct contact with other internal personnel at all levels including management group and business line executive and senior management.

Supervisory Responsibility

Minimum three direct reports at the Financial Analysis Managers I/II level and who are at the assistant vice president or vice president level.

Minimum Qualifications

Master’s degree in Finance, Accounting or Business Administration and 10 years finance experience including financial experience within a financial institution or in lieu of a degee a combined minimum of 14 years higher education and/or relevant work experience including 10 years finance experience including financial experience within a financial institution

Minimum five years’ managerial experience.

Ideal Qualifications

Excellent personal computer skills with solid knowledge of Excel, Access and other departmental software.

Thorough knowledge of project management concepts and application.

Solid knowledge and understanding of the bank’s financial information systems and financial concepts. 

Articulate and familiar with the banking industry, as well as history and performance of M&T.

Solid proven leadership/managerial ability.
