Supervising Senior Accountant - Accounting Policy

Buffalo, NY


Basic Function

The analyst will be involved in a variety of assignments which include, but are not limited to, the

development of financial accounting policies and procedures, testing of new application systems

and products with interfaces to the general ledger, developing present value models, participating

in acquisition-related work, documenting critical accounting estimates, researching and opining

on subjective accounting issues, preparing complex financial statement disclosures and various

other assignments related to the establishment and monitoring of corporate internal controls.



Essential Position Responsibilities

Provide highly technical accounting and operational support throughout M&T Bank Corporation,

ensuring appropriate levels of internal control.

Independently develop and oversee department operational processes, including coordination

with operational managers from other departments.

Research technical accounting issues. Review new business initiatives and structured

transactions for proper application of GAAP. Assist in the interpretation and implementation of

new technical accounting standards.

Lead the development and documentation of complex accounting policies and procedures as

they relate to new and existing accounting pronouncements and new corporate initiatives. Assist

department management in making key recommendations and decisions regarding accounting

policies and interpretations thereof.

Provide significant accounting and operational support throughout the organization on

acquisition-related initiatives. Participate in conversions relating to the design and testing of

interfaces for acquisitions and other transactions.

Perform detailed financial analyses utilizing complex modeling scenarios. Work in collaboration

with business groups to provide financial analysis in accordance with GAAP.

Prepare analyses and workpaper documentation supporting critical accounting estimates.

Assist Operations areas in designing / testing interfaces between subsystems and general ledger.

Provide assistance in monitoring internal control procedures and practices prevalent within the

Organization, and in particular, as they relate to Sarbanes-Oxley objectives.

Provide training and work guidance to junior analysts on assignments.

Serve as a subject matter expert and advisor with respect to accounting and financial

reporting/disclosure issues. The analyst should share knowledge and experience with the

department and other members of the Company in order to efficiently provide services to internal

and external customers.

Perform ad hoc projects and highly specialized assignments in support of department initiatives.



Nature and Scope

The position requires the use of effective communication skills (verbal and written), creative

problem solving skills and the ability to distinguish pertinent facts and comprehend complex

subject matter.

The position requires the person to work independently with minimal guidance from managers,

respond well to tight deadlines, effectively multi-task, and take ownership of assignments. This

position also requires close interaction with management team on various high level

departmental matters.

The position requires regular interaction with department management, management from other

departments and internal and external auditors in order to gather information, provide advice and

respond to inquiries. Contact with Senior Management in the Finance Division is frequent.



Supervisory Responsibility

This position may require supervision and guidance of other department staff on a routine or

project basis.



Minimum Qualifications

B.S. or B.B.A. in Accounting and a minimum of five years accounting experience required.


Preferred Qualifications
Certified Public Accountant designation


Financial institution experience preferred.



Technical Skills

Proficiency in Microsoft Excel essential.

General knowledge of personal computers, including a working knowledge of Microsoft XP

operating system, Hyperion Enterprise and General Ledger system is preferred.

Experience with banking specific financial applications preferred – Hogan, Shaw, etc.

Strong organizational skills with emphasis placed on detail and the ability to work effectively

under time constraints.

Ability to interact effectively with all levels of management both internal and external to the

bank (bank operations personnel, independent accountants, legal counsel, bank regulators and

Senior Management).

Ability to both work independently and as part of a team, set goals and objectives, and meet


Team leadership ability.

Exceptional verbal and written communication skills. Superior analytical problem solving skills

are a basic requirement.
