Technology Manager I
Paramus, NJ
Candidate is expected to closely work with business partners in defining requirements and in implementing solutions as per the requirements. Ability to work independently and to take ownership of solution delivery is critical for success in this role. Understand and evaluate alternative solutions, architectural and technical choices. This role requires a candidate with 12 years of strong Java/Python or other OO Programming experience in financial services industry
The Systems Manager I position manages the activities of several technology Team Leaders or units and is responsible for each Team’s/unit’s development and systems support efforts. Provides short and long term strategic direction for the units and applications in line with the goals of department and the clients they support. Responsible for managing client relations and expectations. Manages the project queue for their area. Strives to achieve individual and organizational objectives at minimum cost.
Consults with client management in the analysis of short and long range business requirements and recommends innovations that anticipate the future impact of changing business requirements. Responsible for building a positive client relationship.
Responsible for monitoring the technology direction of the industry and vendor applications. Researches and initiates change to the status quo, when necessary. Responsible for vendor/product analysis and recommendations.
Builds rapport within the organization. Develops a professional level of communication and cooperation. Maintains relationships with vendors and professional organizations.
Organizes and controls the activities of the teams, assigns personnel to various projects and directs their activities. Ensures completion of schedules. Responsible for short and long term FTE planning. Coordinates activities with other managers.
Responsible for implementing technology consistent with division’s standards and long range plans. Ensures adherence to all department and technology standards and procedures, including all documentation requirements.
May translate requirements to assist staff in preparing detailed specifications for system enhancements. Recommends designs based on business requirements and technology requirements. Identifies issues and concerns.
Monitors project plans; may coordinate major project activities. Keeps abreast of activities outside the team that may impact the team or client environment.
Completes status reports and must be able to present projects, status or activities to senior management.
Responsible for performance appraisals, promotion and salary recommendations, and terminations.
Must be able to develop and manage multiple cost center budgets.
Recommends and initiates new policies and procedures which will improve the performance and effectiveness of the department.
Demonstrates a strong understanding of the business environment and needs within the area of responsibility. Ability to understand technical, business and operational impacts of a project or problem.
Responsible for the job growth and career development of staff members by providing training plans, guidance and sharing knowledge.
Exercise usual authority of a manager concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations.
Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite. Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis. Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand.
Maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
Complete other related duties as assigned.
The incumbent works under the supervision of a Department Manager.
The Systems Manager is responsible for managing all aspects of multiple teams, including resource, project and vendor management.
The incumbent interacts with senior management, other technology personnel, clients and vendors.
The Systems Manager is responsible for long and short term strategies and creates a unified direction. The incumbent advocates new initiatives and demonstrates support of senior management decisions and direction.
Number of staff varies.
Minimum of an Associates’ degree and a minimum of 10 years’ systems development experience on enterprise applications, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 12 years’ higher education and/or work experience
Minimum of 2 years’ managerial or leadership experience
Experience on large system enhancements, conversions and production problem resolution
Familiarity with application development support software and hardware platforms
Ability to effectively use project management, word processing and spreadsheet applications
Excellent problem solving skills to assist in issue resolution
Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to effectively present to the target audience
Excellent analytical, organization, project, and time management skills; strong judgment and management skills; understands the agendas and perspectives of others
Must be able to assert ideas and gain support and commitment from others
Experience and skill in managing across functional and organizational lines
Hands-on experience in Java, Python, SAS, WebServices(REST/SOAP), Unix/Solaris/Linux, JIRA, ANT, Maven, JUnit, SubVersion.
Minimum 12 years’ experience working on enterprise applications.
Experience with enterprise applications in financial services industry
Excellent organization, communication and problem solving skills
Experience with Agile Methodology/Development
Understanding of financial CCAR models
Experience with distributed processing using messaging/middleware and grid technologies preferred
Prior Finance or Capital Markets experience required Desired Skills
SAS experience is a big plus
Experience with real time systems
Prior experience with managing small teams is helpful Education
Masters in Computers or Engineering is a plus.
