Server, Storage, Database and Middleware Engineering Manager

Amherst, NY

Candidates must have 10-15 years’ experience in design, engineering and administration of servers, storage, database and middleware infrastructure along with at least 10 years’ technology management experience, in a large organization, leading large diverse teams of senior technical staff.

Position Overview

The Infrastructure Engineering role manages and directs the strategy, architecture, development, and delivery of server, storage, database and middleware infrastructure for M&T, and works closely with infrastructure and application development teams within the organization to consistently deliver industry standard server, storage, database and middleware technology services.

Responsibilities include the following

  • Manage/Lead Server, Storage, Database and Middleware Engineering staff, develop team members, and implement best in class practices and processes
  • Work/Liaison directly with Enterprise Architecture to determine appropriate technology platform design, sizing and TCO for various application and technology initiatives
  • Work/Liaison directly with application development teams to plan for and deliver server, storage, database and middleware capacity for various application upgrades and migration initiatives, and to support organic growth.
  • Work directly with the IT support areas and provide Level 3/4 operational support and Engineering services as needed.
  • Proven expertise in server, storage, database and middleware concepts and technology with ability to mentor team members and closely direct implementation activities
  • Plan, manage and provide technology infrastructure support to other IT areas.
  • Responsible for availability, security and performance of all development and production server, storage, database and middleware infrastructure.
  • Manage the engineering and design activities of the company's technology infrastructure
  • Manage the development, evolution and implementation of best practices and processes while maintaining agility in delivering industry standard server, storage, database and middleware capacity
  • Monitor the technology direction of the industry and vendor applications (Hardware & Software) specific to current/future businesses capabilities.
  • Manages Technology department(s) and is responsible for all financial (budgets), compliance, human resources, risk operations with the departments.
  • Ensure activities managed adhere to all Department and Technology standards and procedures, including all documentation requirements to protect Bank interests and serve as a reference source.
  • Develop and maintain M&T internal control standards, including timely implementation of internal and external audit points together with any issues raised by external regulators as applicable.
  • Understand and adhere to the Company’s risk and regulatory standards, policies and controls in accordance with the Company’s Risk Appetite.  Design, implement, maintain and enhance internal controls to mitigate risk on an ongoing basis.  Identify risk-related issues needing escalation to management.
  • Must be confident with leading multiple teams often in different geographic locations and time zones.
  • Complete understanding of the system development life cycle.
  • In-depth knowledge of multiple divisions industry/ competitors' strategies

Minimum Qualifications Required

  • Minimum 15 years’ experience in a technology leadership role
  • Minimum of Associates’ degree and with 12 years’ technology management or large program leadership experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 14 years’ higher education and/or work experience, including a minimum of 12 years’ technology management or large program leadership experience.
  • Strong experience in server, storage, database and middleware platform delivery, high availability, replication, and optimization
  • Extensive technology platform design and implementation experience in an enterprise environment including:
  • Enterprise class Intel based server hardware
  • Enterprise class SAN and NAS Technology such as those from EMC, NetApp, IBM, etc.
  • Server Virtualization (VMWare) with server farms running applications on Windows and Linux (RHEL) operating systems
  • Enterprise class Database Technologies such as Oracle, SQL Server, etc.
  • Enterprise class Middleware Technologies such as WebSphere, MQ, etc.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree and with 12 years’ technology management or large program leadership experience, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of 18 years’ higher education and/or work experience.
  • Extensive application, product knowledge experience with skills, application(s) and function of the technology area being led.
  • Subject Matter Expert understanding of applications supported with an advanced knowledge of interfacing/integrated applications.
  • Proven mentoring and leadership capabilities from a project management perspective.
  • Good understanding of the Bank’s application framework.
  • Aware of the Bank’s business plan and strategic objectives with the ability to shape direction.
  • Mastered knowledge and focus of the entire system and support projects outside of normal BAU.
  • Self-motivated and able to motivate others.
