Job Title: Sr Risk Manager - WISD

Location: Buffalo, NY or Wilmington, DE


Position Overview:
This position is responsible for both strategic and tactical delivery of second line risk management services for the Wealth and Institutional Services Division, in line with department policies and industry standards and expectations. Focused areas may include Wealth Advisory, Private Banking, M&T Securities and Asset Management. The position requires the oversight of processes for the risk-based identification, assessment, quantification, documentation, escalation, reporting, and communication of unmitigated risks within the business in a manner that adheres to the operational risk management framework and expectations of key stakeholders, up to and including the Board. The position requires the establishment of internal and external relationships with senior level personnel to remain in tune with emerging risks, best practices, and the evolving regulatory landscape. The position may have responsibility over members within the team, who will develop under the direction of this individual.
Key Responsibilities:
• Manage all aspects of second line risk management responsibilities for the designated Wealth and Institutional Services Division businesses or functions and influences the management of risks in a value-added manner and in line with stakeholder expectations;
• Interact regularly with Senior, Middle, and Line Management in areas of responsibility, as well as with external peers and members of professional organizations to remain aware of changing or emerging risks and proactively utilize this information in continuing monitoring and oversight activities performed by the team;
• Maintain ongoing awareness of current and proposed discretionary initiatives within the assigned portfolios to understand the impacts of the project from a risk management perspective and determine levels of involvement to ensure key risks of the initiative are managed and any concerns are being escalated;
• Work with management to assess their implementation of solutions to examiner or audit findings and engage with Senior Management where concerns may be noted. Provide advisory and consulting services to Bank management on related risk and control matters as identified through the second line risk management program;
• Effectively communicate in order to influence a wide range of audiences (including Senior and Executive management within assigned portfolios;
• Provide appropriate level of oversight within team structures. Actively participate in overall development of team. Provide coaching and developmental feedback and tailor approach based upon staff skills and experience;
• Assist with special projects and department wide initiatives, as requested;
• Manage multiple tasks concurrently in an efficient and effective manner with minimal oversight;
• Exercise management level responsibilities concerning staffing, performance appraisals, promotions, salary recommendations, performance management and terminations, as applicable;
• Promote an environment that supports diversity and reflects the M&T Bank brand; and
• Complete other related duties as assigned.
Nature and Scope:
This role reports to a senior management individual in the Risk Management Division and supports the overall execution of the Operation Risk Management framework via high quality, timely and value-added services and activities, which meet the requirements of regulatory expectations and the Risk Committee of the Board. This position directly communicates with Middle and Senior Management, External Auditors, and Regulators. Builds strong partnerships with business stakeholders and third line Audit team members. The position is expected to operate independently with minimal oversight to deliver high quality products timely.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities:
This position will have supervisory responsibilities for team members within the respective Wealth and Institutional Division risk management team within Operational Risk Management. Staff development and talent management are expectations for further professional growth of the team.
Minimum Required Qualifications:
• Bachelor’s degree and a minimum of ten years’ experience in wealth management and/or asset management experience or financial operations management, risk, audit, compliance or related experience within these business segments, or in lieu of a degree, a combined minimum of thirteen years’ higher education and/or work experience including a minimum of nine years’ experience in banking, wealth management and/or asset management or financial operations management, risk, audit, compliance or related experience.
• Minimum of five years’ managerial experience.
• Strong experience in banking, wealth management and/or or asset management processes.
• Strong knowledge and use of risk management systems.
• Significant analytical and critical thinking skills.
• Superior ability to shape strategy and identify efforts that will have the greatest organizational impact.
• Demonstrated leadership and sound business ethics.
• Excellent verbal and written communications skills. Ability to convey complex conceptual information/ideas on issues requiring extensive interpretation and opinion. Experience in applying appropriate discretion when dealing with sensitive issues and conveying technical concepts in an easy to understand manner
• Strong experience in managing across functional and organizational lines aligning peers to the execution of Operational Risk plans.
• Excellent managerial skills with strong knowledge of talent management, and superior interpersonal skills.
• Proficient in word processing, presentation and spreadsheet software.
Ideal Qualifications Preferred:
• Advanced degree (MBA)
• Experience in an audit or risk function within the financial services wealth and asset management industry.
• Relevant certification such as CFIRS;
• Understanding of supervisory expectations and regulations, and tools specific to the related business;
• Possesses strong project management and interpersonal skills, makes sound decisions, exhibiting initiative and intuitive thinking.
• Demonstrates strong judgment, political astuteness, and sensitivity to cultural diversity.
